If your child is taking Computing in Secondary 3 or Secondary 4, you may hear terms such as G3 Computing, K349, Python and the practical examination. The names can make the subject sound more complicated than it is.
At a high level, G3 Computing combines computing knowledge with practical problem solving. Students learn important computing concepts and also use computers to develop solutions.
Is G3 Computing the same as O-Level Computing?
From 2027, Singapore students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). The Computing subject at the G3 level uses syllabus code K349.
It succeeds the previous Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level Computing syllabus 7155. If your child, school or tuition provider still refers to “O-Level Computing”, that is why the terminology may sound familiar.

Does G3 Computing involve Python?
Yes. Python is the programming language specified in the G3 Computing syllabus. It is part of the Algorithms and Programming module.
Students do more than type Python code. They need to understand a problem, work out what a program should do, read and trace code, find errors, test solutions and write or modify programs.
How is G3 Computing assessed?
Students take two compulsory papers.
Written examination
Duration: 2 hours
A written paper covering the five syllabus modules.
Lab-based examination
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
A practical examination covering Algorithms & Programming and Spreadsheets.
This combination matters: G3 Computing is not a subject where students only memorise definitions. They are also expected to apply what they know using a computer.
Is G3 Computing like Maths?
In one important way, yes. In Maths, knowing a formula is different from recognising when and how to use it in an unfamiliar question.
Computing has a similar challenge. A student may understand what a Python loop does when shown an example, but a new problem may require them to decide whether a loop is needed, what should happen inside it and how to test whether the solution works.
